HOW TO TREAT DEHYDRATED SKIN?

Our skin needs lots of moisture to look fresh, plump and healthy. But over the years, the skin loses its natural ability to retain moisture. When you start to notice a worsening of dehydrated skin symptoms, that is when you should start with a quality skincare regimen at the very latest.

Healthy, supple skin offers the best protection for the body. Without sufficient moisture however, the skin is not able to perform its protective function.

Very young skin is able to hydrate itself and can produce sufficient amounts of natural humectants, like for example hyaluronic acid, that have the ability to retain water and bind it within the connective tissue and the epidermis. As a result, the skin is kept well-moisturized and protected against dehydration.

As we age, it becomes harder for our body to regulate the skin’s moisture levels. From the age of 25, the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid and urea already begins to decline. The effects can both be seen and felt: The skin grows drier and begins to feel tight and rough to the touch. As dehydrated facial skin is prone to premature aging, little dry lines are starting to appear. This skin type is also very susceptible to environmental factors such as variations in temperature and sun exposure. Without the right skincare, this can lead to a defective skin barrier and premature skin aging.

Is there a difference between dry and dehydrated skin?

When your skin feels tight and dry, this can be caused by lots of factors. In general, dehydrated skin is caused by a lack of water, while lipid dry skin is caused by a lack of oil. Lipid dry skin does not produce enough sebum, which compromises the skin’s protective barrier. This skin type needs products that contain rich oils and lipids to bring the skin back into balance. Dehydrated skin, on the other hand, needs products that replenish the skin’s moisture reservoirs and protect it from drying out. Inadequate skincare can lead to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles caused by dryness – but high-quality hydrating skincare products can quickly make them disappear again.

How to treat dehydrated skin?

If you have dehydrated facial skin, you should opt for a skincare routine that replenishes the skin’s moisture levels and locks in hydration. Every daily skincare routine should start with cleansing, and this is no exception. The Cleansing Fluid moisturizes the skin, while gently removing excess sebum, impurities and make-up. Complete your cleansing with a tonic to clarify and refresh the skin without stripping it of moisture. The thin skin around the eyes is especially prone to dryness. Our cooling Eye Gel helps to hydrate the skin and smooth crow’s feet and fine wrinkles caused by dryness. Special Eye Patches provide an ultimate boost of hydration for bright and beautiful eyes. Regular exfoliation gets rid of dead skin cells and prepares dehydrated facial skin for better absorption of the products to follow. Our gentle Exfoliating Scrub or a moisturizing AHA exfoliant are ideal for this. Face masks are a must-have for dehydrated facial skin. Moisturizing sheet masks are great to use before special occasions. Then you just have to finish your routine with a hydrating face cream. Hydrating serums are great if you want to achieve even better and longer-lasting results. Use them under your cream to provide additional moisturizing benefits to dehydrated facial skin.

Dehydrated facial skin – What are the Dos and Don‘ts?

If you have dry, dehydrated facial skin, there are some basic habits that are big no-nos because they strip your skin of moisture even more. First of all, use lukewarm water rather than hot water for washing your skin, because hot water can cause your skin to dry out even faster. After showering, we highly recommend using a moisturizing body lotion. During the winter months, you can apply a rich body butter to relieve dryness and moisturize the skin. Too much sun exposure can also worsen dry skin. Our final tip: Drink lots of water! This will keep your skin moist and hydrated from the inside out.

How does hyaluronic acid benefit your skin?

Hyaluronic acid is an excellent hydrating and plumping agent for dehydrated facial skin, and a great natural wrinkle filler. It is a major component of various connective tissues and helps to keep the skin firm and deeply hydrated. Thanks to its amazing ability to attract and retain large amounts of water, hyaluronic acid moisturizes and plumps the skin while strengthening the collagen fibers and elastic fibers. Unfortunately, the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid decreases as we age, which causes the skin to become dry and lose elasticity. Skincare with hyaluronic acid benefits dehydrated facial skin by replenishing and restoring lost moisture. It manages to smooth wrinkles caused by dryness and is very well tolerated by the skin.
