COMBINATION SKIN – HOW TO RESTORE A MATTIFIED AND EVEN COMPLEXION

Combination skin is characterized by oily skin in the T-zone and dry skin around the eyes, cheeks and the neck. Finding the right routine for this skin type can be difficult as the needs of combination skin are so varied.

Combination skin is a blend of two completely opposite skin types, dry and oily skin. In the T-zone, which includes the forehead, nose and chin, the skin will often appear shiny with enlarged pores and can be prone to blemishes and clogged pores. That is because the sebaceous glands produce excess sebum, causing dead skin cells to build up and clog pores – which leads to blackheads and breakouts.

On the other hand, combination skin is rather dry in the area around the eyes, cheeks and the neck. The skin might feel tight and look flaky. In winter, when it is cold outside and dry inside, combination skin will often feel dry, while in summer it becomes oily. You might notice how make-up does not last very long and starts to melt off the nose, forehead and chin. It is not completely clear what causes combination skin. It seems likely that hormones play a big role, especially in women. They are prone to combination skin when they experience hormonal changes due to puberty, pregnancy, hormonal contraception and menopause, for example.

Caring for combination skin therefore is a challenge. Dry areas need lipids and moisturizing, while for oily areas anything too rich might lead to blemishes and even oilier skin. However, anything too light will not meet the needs of the dry zones. It goes without saying that only very advanced cream textures with the right blend of highly distinguished active ingredients will manage to balance out the opposing needs of the respective skin areas.
